vacation - the first three days

On Thursday I was still stressed out and sick after Wednesday and all of the dog problems. I slept as much as I could.

Steven came home from wrestling camp.

On Friday I took the Jeep in for an oil change. Afterwards I went to Trader Joe's (I love their French lemonades) and then to the regular grocery store. I got all sorts of healthy foods to cook a lot of home meals in the coming week.

On Friday afternoon I cleaned the upstairs bathroom. That is the bathroom where I have spent so much time being sick, and the toilet was nastier than a public park porta-potty. But it is sparkling clean now!

Then I cut up all sorts of veggies to make a great salad, and got dinner ready. We had stadium brats, four cheese mashed potatoes, salad, watermelon, and corn on the cob. With chocolate ice cream and cookies for dessert.

Today I took Steven to the massage therapist. I am working on laundry, and have been watching the Tigers game (as I have on all of my days off).

Tomorrow will be gardening...

on the bright side

At least it is "vacation Friday" for me. Dan thinks he will be ready to take off work on Saturday. So we will have a week of family time, even if it does mean we'll spend a lot of it cleaning up after the poor elderly dog!

How come it is so hard to go in to work on that last day before vacation?

Though, after cleaning up all sorts of dog feces, you really do not want to go anywhere anyway. (vomits)

more dog problems

Came home last night and had to clean up a lot of dog droppings again. Dan had his turn this morning. I came downstairs this afternoon and he had diarrhea again, as well as dropping some huge mushy poops.

I do not know how much more of this I can take.

And I was supposed to go to a party this afternoon before work and get to see some beloved people I have not had time to see in a long time.

And instead I was trying to clean up dog diarrhea from a carpet.

(pukes)

Now its time to go to work, and the mother of all storms is breaking out. Maybe it will at least break the heat wave...

Laurell K. Hamilton and her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Books

I stopped reading this series after Danse Macabre, though I truly feel all of the books after Obsidian Butterfly are pretty much unreadable. I will not even try the latest, The Harlequin - I have too many other things to do than waste my time on really bad books!

This series went from being tightly plotted and fun little mystery stories with supernatural elements to plotless and boring porno drivel.

None the less, here are some things that might get me to read another book by this author someday:

1. a well crafted plot

2. the book containing something other than poorly written and boring sex scenes and the characters being all emo and angsty about the sex

3. a return to feeling that the main characters are actually in danger (from something other than rough sex)

4. an attempt at characterization ~ many of the characters introduced since Obsidian Butterfly are little more than ambulatory male genitals ~ it would be really nice to get a "feel" for what makes these characters tick, for their personalities, etc.

5. a return to actual intimacy rather than just meaningless physical sex - Anita and Jean Claude going to a restaurant together so he can metaphysically taste the food she is eating is actually a lot more intimate that a full scale orgy that includes characters you feel you know nothing about

6. the characters need lives - why not mention that Jason and some of the guys went to a Cards game and drank some beer and had fun? It doesn't have to be a Cards game, but you get the general idea. And you do not have to detail the game in the book - just make it clear that the characters do something (anything) other than have sex

7. Anita needs to get back to work and raise some zombies or do something else productive (and a lot more interesting for the reader) with her time other than just play with the boy toys (who have personalities of cardboard) in her harem

8. how about an explanation for some of the really weird stuff, like how Anita can be carrying around four kinds of were virus in her bloodstream and still never turn furry or feathery?

9. proofreading and editing are a MUST - and no more cutting and pasting - the group sex scene was boring the first time around, and agonizing the second

10. these constant nonsensical powerups from sex have got to stop ~ they are way over the top and swing too far into deau ex machina territory (see number 3)

getting caught up

The most important news is that Dan's stepbrother sounds like he is doing better. He has fought off the massive infections, and had brain surgery on Thursday and came out of it OK. Hopefully he will continue to improve!

I had  another slip and fall at work and banged up my bad knee again. It is really sore and bruised. I am hoping once some of the swelling and bruising goes down, I will not need physical therapy again and that everything will be all right.

I took Steven to a massage therapist in Saline over the weekend. His shins have been very sore for a couple of weeks now (ever since he had those five soccer games in three days). She worked on his lower legs for an hour, and it seemed to help immensely!

This morning he left for wrestling camp, and I hope he has a great time!

Top News - Ancient Remains Reveal 'First Gun Victim' - AOL News :

Will Mankind ever finally manage to outgrow the need for warfare, Empire, genocide, and conquest?

gross gross gross gross

The poor dog has been having diarrhea since I made my last entry an hour or so ago. I've been taking him outside, but he has still made messes all over the floor anyway. I have used up half a canister of Clorox wipes trying to clean the floor. The worst thing is that he runs as he ...runs...so there are small messes everywhere as opposed to one huge mess in one spot.

What a crappy night!

**sigh**

Had to come home and clean up a bunch of dog poop (really nasty smelly mushy semi-solid dog poop) yet again. It is not the dog's fault - he is very old and incontinent. It is not the fault of Dan or the children, as he sometimes pees or poops all over the floor less than an hour after you let him outside.

This is why we will probably be canceling our vacation. he is just too old and infirm to take with us, or to leave at the kennel. And most pet sitters drop by your house twice a day - it is bad enough now - I do not even want to know how bad it would be if he only got let out twice a day.

It sounds like Dan's stepbrother is not doing any better. I will probably try to talk Dan into flying out to Minnesota for a couple of days of our vacation week (hopefully the brother will be doing well enough for Dan to visit him in two weeks).

still busy

We are still very busy.

We did take time out last weekend to celebrate Father's Day.

On Saturday afternoon we went to a very nice party on the acreage of a family we know. They have a pond in a meadow surrounded by a forest. The pond was great for swimming, and they have a picnic shelter in the meadow, and had a barbecue going. It was relaxing and fun.

On Sunday the kids cooked a nice breakfast for their daddy.

One of Dan's stepbrothers has been hospitalized and is in very rough shape. We have been praying and hoping very hard that he will be doing better soon. He has been in intensive care since last Thursday. I not only feel awful for him, but for his wife and children as well.  His poor wife sounds frantic (and she has every reason and right to be!)

We are probably going to be canceling our vacation. It was to be at the end of this month and the first week of July. We have camping reservations at Muskegon State Park, right on Lake Michigan.

The dog is just not physically up to being boarded a kennel, and there is no way in the world that he would be able to get in and out of the camper.  I suppose we could try to get a pet sitter, but they are expensive. And with his incontinence problems, I do not even want to know how bad the house would be if we left him with a pet sitter who would only drop by a couple of times a day.

Since we have so many things that have to be done in the house and in the yard, we might just cancel our reservations and stay home to get our "honey dew" lists completed.

And yes, that is depressing - and when you throw in so many bad things happening to people we know lately, it is enough to make me want to cry whenever I think about this stuff too long.

it's been busy

It has been a busy few days.

Over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Steven had five soccer games - one in Clinton and four in Adrian. He and Bill and I all got a little sun burned, but not very seriously. It was hard on Steven, playing in the heat like that, but he is fine now.

We finally got a chance to get our vegetable garden in over the weekend, too. Every other time we had tried, we were either way too busy or it was raining.

And, of course, we have been busy working our butts off...there are so many people out of work around here in Michigan, so I know I should not complain, so I will just keep my mouth shut on that subject.

Verlander no hitter

Justin Verlander pitched a no hitter for the Tigers last night! It was the first no hitter by a Tigers pitcher since the spring of 1984! I was at work so I was not able to watch the game, but Dan and the kids told me it was a thing of great and glowing beauty!

worst sex scene ever written

http://community.livejournal.com/weepingcock/68981.html

Clicking this link will take you to what may well be the worst sex scene ever written. Yes, it was published by a real publisher and written by a professional writer. You have to ask how many books of much higher quality might have been turned down so that this steamin' pile of poo could be printed. And yes - trees died for this!

fireflies

I've been sort of stressed out and tired lately.

I have had stress diarrhea several days in the past week, and missed two days of work with headaches from hell.

But I am happy to report that Bill is doing fine after getting his wisdom teeth out last week. No complications at all (so far).

We actually had a fully sunny day today - after some pretty serious rain yesterday, it finally cleared up towards evening, and today was just gorgeous. And the kids and I have the sun burns to prove it!

And tonight I saw the first fireflies of the summer.

Is that sweet or what?

recent reads

Song of Unmaking by Caitlin Brennan (Judith Tarr) ~ second book of The White Magic Trilogy ~ Valeria is now accepted by the Riding School, where gods of patterns and time take the shape of white stallions and help determine the future of the Empire. But she and her teacher, First Rider Kerrec, both carry damage from their encounters with enemies of the Empire. Those same enemies, barbarians who follow the Unmaking (which would lead to the destruction of the world), threaten the Empire again. Can two damaged Riders, and the stallion gods who carry them, help the Empire win a deadly war?

Shattered Dance by Caitlin Brennan (Judith Tarr) ~ third book of The White Magic Trilogy ~ the enemies of the Empire, failing in warfare, decide to bring down the Empire with more subtle tactics, with magical assassination attempts and by using the Riders and the stallion-gods against the very Empire they serve. Center to their plot is the Rider Valeria, embittered by the loss of the mate she loves...I did not enjoy this book as much as the previous two...there was way too much emphasis on the love lives of the characters to the detriment of the plot, IMHO.

The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien ~ a more complete telling of the Tale of Turin, previously published in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Well worth looking at, however, even if you have read the previous version of it, due to the wonderful art work of Alan Lee. While the color plates are awesome, the pencil drawings are even more so!

Dragonwell Dead by Laura Childs is the eighth book in a series called The Tea Shop Mysteries. Like the others, it is set in a charming tea shop in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina run by Theodosia Browning. This one involves poisoned tea (something unfortunately used too often in this series), rare orchids, charity fund raising, and international finance. I read this series for the charm and atmosphere of both the tea shop, and of Charleston, and both are fully present.

Jack Knife by Virginia Baker is a wonderful first novel by a very promising writer. This one combines science fiction with crime fiction with mystery, and works on all levels. A scientist and a soldier are sent back to Victorian London from future America to capture and/or eliminate a (literal) mad scientist who had escaped through the portal back into time. While in London, they meet a noble born (younger son) detective, who is investigating a serial killer called Jack the Ripper. To their shock, the cases seem to converge...I really enjoyed this one!

All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris is the seventh book in her Southern Vampire Mysteries. New Orleans has been devastated by hurricane Katrina. This has eroded the power base of that city's vampire Queen... whom Sookie Stackhouse, heroine of the series, and our favorite mind reading bar maid from small town Louisiana, has promised to help out (for a boat load of money) at a big vampire conference and trial. A lot of people (both supernatural and mortal) would like to do damage to the Queen now that she is down and out. Can Sookie survive what could kill one of the most powerful vampires around? I enjoyed it, but still thought it to be one of the weaker books in this series. It all centered around one event, and while in the last book the author seemed to be getting the main character's love life straightened out, in this one it gets complicated again. I love these books, but sometimes I think that I am the only fan who does not care which male Sookie ends up with, as long as her love life is settled. To me, her love life is one of the least interesting parts of the books - though I realize that her growth as a character can come from her romances.

The Last Colony by John Scalzi is the third and last book in a trilogy that began with Old Man's War and continued with The Ghost Brigades. John Perry and his beloved second wife are now administrators of a human colony. Because of their military and administrative backgrounds they are picked to start up a new colony - but they are not told that the real purpose of the colonists is to be bait in a deadly trap for enemy alien species. But are those aliens truly enemies? Is there any way for humanity to peacefully coexist in a galaxy filled with other intelligent life forms? Who are the real enemies of mankind? John Perry is put in a terrible place - where he must decide the future and fate of his entire species. A fitting end to one of the best science fiction trilogies I have read in a long time! Bravo to John Scalzi!

Mammoth by John Varley tells the story of a multibillionaire who has interesting hobbies. One day he decides he would like to bring mammoths back into the world. Teams are sent to the Arctic to find mammoth carcasses frozen into the ice, with the idea of recovering good enough genetic material that a mammoth or mammoth/elephant hybrid embryo can be implanted into an elephant womb and be brought to term. But one of the teams finds a mammoth frozen with two humans - and one of the humans is wearing a wrist watch and they have a briefcase...the billionaire will have his hobby and then some...while I normally do not enjoy time travel books very much, this one was actually a lot of fun!!

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is a classic of feminism and African American literature. I found it to be a very difficult read for many reasons - among them the heavy vernacular the book is written in, another being the disturbing racism and sexism in the book's content (one example being a group of men of color discussing how great it would be to beat up light skinned women because the bruises would show up better!). Just sheer stubbornness kept me going until the end...

The Diamond Warriors by David Zindell is the fourth and final book of his fantasy series called The Ea Cycle. Time is running out - by autumn the dark lord Morjin, should have the power to free his master Angra Mainyu from imprisonment on another world, and set him free upon the universe. Valashu Elahad has a few precious months to unite the few free peoples remaining on the world of Ea, and to get their armies marching for a final show down. But Valashu is going to be betrayed by the last person he (or the reader) would expect...a beautifully written finale to a lovely fantasy series.

The Telling by Ursula K. Le Guin is a lovely little science fiction novel. Sutty (born in India and raised in Canada) decides to become a researcher and leave the Earth of her time, which is in tumult from terrorist attacks from religious fanatics. She is sent to the world of Aka, where the new regime has systematically been destroying all traces of its original culture, history, tradition, and literature. But Sutty gets the opportunity to travel to a backwards mountainous region of Aka, and there she encounters the Telling, an oral tradition of the past...a deep and intelligent short science fiction novel that I really enjoyed.

The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis is classic science fiction novel, which has won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. In our future, historians travel back to our past to do their research.  A young Oxford undergrad named Kivrin is sent back to the Middles Ages for her research. But a health crisis both of Oxford past and Oxford future, endangers Kivrin in the past, and her colleagues in the future. And Kivrin is in greater danger than anyone thought possible...a beautiful written and very moving story.

Sweet and Deadly by Charlaine Harris in her original novel, recently republished. Catherine Linton has returned to her tiny hometown in rural Mississippi to wait for the murderer of her parents to strike again. She is going to find the killer and bring that person to justice. She figures that she is on the right track when one of her father's employees is found murdered...but what if the killer gets her first? A bit dated (the newspaper where Catherine works still uses typewriters) but still a very engrossing story!

better day (so far)

I got a good night's sleep, so things seem better in general. Dan got a good night's sleep, so he is being sweet rather than sour. Bill is feeling better today, and has graduated from milk shakes and pudding and mashed potatoes to chunky soup. The anesthesia is out of his system, and so his stomach is happier, which is pretty important for a teen aged boy. So he is feeling a lot better today, too!

Who knows - maybe the Tiggies can even beat the Indians tonight!

long bad day

Dan pulled an all nighter at work last night. He and his buddy were trying to finish putting in the floor at that restaurant in Ann Arbor. When he got home around 6 AM he was tired and grouchy, and woke me up, and his snoring kept me up.

I took Bill to the dentist this morning for the wisdom teeth extraction, which seemed to go well, other than him being very clingy after coming out of the anesthesia. We're talking clingy to the point where he did not want me to go out and pull the Jeep up to the door so he would not have to walk very far clingy.

After we left I drove to the Steak and Shake so he could have a shake, and then to the grocery store to get his prescriptions filled. The poor kid's mouth was so numb as much milk shake went down the front of his shirt as went down his throat. When he realized that, he nearly started crying.

I got him home, and Steven and I settled him down on the couch, and made sure he got a dose of the narcotic and the antibiotic. And then we watched movies - The Illusionist was very good, and the first season of Meerkat Manor on DVD.

The poor kid was confused and in pain all day long, and it nearly killed me to see him like that.

Then Dan came home from work and was very tired and very grouchy, and now he is snoring so badly I cannot stand to be in the same room as he is.

And the Tigers lost - their closer blew a four run lead and lost the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

What a freaking rotten day!

Hopefully tomorrow will be a lot better. I might sleep on the couch, so that I can actually get some sleep. That would help my outlook on life significantly. If Dan gets a good night of sleep, his attitude should improve 100%.

And with the anesthesia out of his system, hopefully Bill will also feel a lot better!

And who knows? Maybe the Tigers can get things back on track! Miracles happen!

wisdom teeth in the morning

Well, Bill gets his wisdom teeth out in the morning.

I hope he has a better time of it than I did when I got mine out. I got a nasty infection, which led to them stitching some tubing into my cheek for the pus to drain out (it went into the tube and then down my throat). I had to take antibiotics for a long time, and ended up having to have two additional minor outpatient operations to take care of things (draining the infection and putting in the tubing, followed later by having the tubing taken out). And I was an eighteen year old college student, away from home and with no family to help me at all - Dan was the only one to help me (he was my boyfriend way back then).

I do not want anything like that happening to him!

Though he will be at home with a loving family pampering him and taking care of him for three entire days after the operation (I will be with him on Friday and Saturday and Dan is taking the day off to be with him on Sunday). So that is way better than what I had right there...

I think I am dreading this more than he is.

But I am ready. The house is well stocked with easy to eat items such as pudding and jello and soup, and I have a stack of movies on hand. I will even have the first season of Meerkat Manor delivered from Netflix tomorrow.

Man, I hate the thought of my son being in pain...
