weekends end too soon!

Weekends always seem to end way too soon!

We were happy to watch the Tigers win over the very good Angels, and also see the Red Wings win their second round second game against our arch rivals the Colorado Avalanche.

Tonight I drove into Ann Arbor at midnight to take Steven to the midnight release of Mario Kart for the wii. We picked up the game, an extra wii wheel, the guide book, and a new guitar controller for Guitar Hero (the kids wore the buttons out on the old controller). I think he and his dad are fighting over the television upstairs right now. I'm glad I'm downstairs!

quiet Friday at home

Poor Dan has been working midnights again this week, and he is exhausted. The restaurant remodeling is going well, though, and they are ahead of schedule. They have to remodel the restaurant late at night when it is closed.

I'm somewhat worn out, too, though obviously not as badly as Dan.

It was my day off, so I spent a quiet day at home, with laundry and rest. Tomorrow I will have to go grocery shopping. I have a ten dollars off coupon for Whole Foods that I refuse to let expire unused. I also have to stop off at Sam's Club.

We watched the Tigers game tonight, and were actually encouraged even though they lost. They lost a close low scoring game to a good team. It was a positive thing to see them be able to hang in there against a team as good as the Angels without having to score ten or more runs to be in the game.

After everyone else went to bed I watched the first disc of the TV series The Dresden Files. I thought I would give it a try because I love the series of books by Jim Butcher. Unfortunately, they seemed to miss the quirky humor of the books. It was OK, but no more than OK. I hope that HBO will do a better job with the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse books.

Tigers AND Red Wings win!!!!!!!!!!

The Tigers seem to be playing a lot better, though starting pitching seems to be pretty suspect (even Bonderman was struggling today). They actually swept a series against the Texas Rangers. We are no longer in last place in the AL!!!! YAY!!!!

And the Red Wings won the first game of their second round playoff series against our arch rivals, the Colorado Avalanche. Winning against the Avs is always sweet as cherry cheesecake.

All of the Tigers fans I know are furious at Joel Zumaya right now. So here is this young pitcher who is supposedly rehabbing from major shoulder surgery - and he is stupid and reckless and irresponsible enough to do some keg stands. That means he was hand standing on top of a beer keg guzzling beer. While binge drinking is dangerous, no one is furious about the beer. Everyone is angry enough to spit nails that this freaking idiot is supporting his considerable weight (and he's not a scrawny guy in any way) on his arms and shoulders. The pictures are all over the internet right now - and the tats on his arms have changed since spring training, so it is pretty clear that these are really fresh pictures. Zumaya is a moron! What a way to rehab your shoulder, dumbass!

This on top of driving from San Diego, California to Lakeland, Florida with his younger brother and their grandmother in 24 hours. Yeah, do the math!

This guy is a reckless, thoughtless, thrill seeking idiot.

I hope the Tigers wash their hands of him. No matter how many chances they give him, it's obvious that he is not mature enough to control himself, and that he will continue to harm himself through freak accidents.

And yes, he's young - but not that much younger than Verlander or Bonderman, who both act much more responsibly and professionally.

No excuses.

more weird phone problems

Well, yesterday morning, again on a Wednesday, and again obnoxiously early, the phone next to our bed started dialing long distance phone calls (you can tell that from the number of digits it dials) all by itself again. This makes no sense as we had our land line turned off, going strictly all cell.

It did stop when I unplugged it from the phone jack.

Weird. Very weird.

I hope this is not going to happen every Wednesday morning!

best selling author caught with her pants down

This plagiarism story was broken by the same bloggers who broke the story about a writer plagiarizing the late David Gemmell. The story about best selling romance writer Cassie Edwards plagiarizing various scholarly books and articles broke in January, 2008. You can see some of the plagiarism for yourself at the site which first reported it: smart bitches who love trashy books

The good news was just announced: Edwards and publishing company part ways

It's always nice to see a large corporation do the correct ethical thing! Kudos to her former publisher, Signet! :bravo:

Verlander's first win!

While I cannot watch any baseball night games which take place from Sunday through Thursday, I try to keep up with da boyz of da summer. It is my understanding that our ace pitcher, Justin Verlander, got his first win of the season tonight.

It is a huge relief for me as a fan, and I am sure it is even more of a relief for Verlander himself!

Good going, big guy!

what I'm reading

My latest slog of a science fiction read has been the Hugo nominee Ian McDonald's Brasyl. The author throws in tons of Portuguese words and tons more of Brazilian slang - at least 2/3 of which does not appear in the glossary in the back of the book. There are three main characters - an obnoxious (I believe this is intentional, as no one could EVER create a character so irritating on accident!) woman who produces reality television shows in our present day ; a petty thief who lives in a future where quantum computers are beginning to take hold; and an Irish Jesuit warrior priest who lives in the 1700's about to embark on a dangerous mission to catch a renegade priest somewhere in the Brazilian rain forests. Thus far the priest's story is the only one which has captured my interest - other than wishing the TV producer would die a terrible death. ;)

Once he begins to knit the three story lines together (which I believe the quantum stuff will allow him to do) I think I will enjoy the book more.

In the meantime, the latest book by Iain Banks is trying to seduce away from Brasyl - Matter keeps whispering to me in a little soft sexy voice from its place in the TBR pile-

Don't you want to read me instead?

And while cleaning the house this weekend I hit the bonanza - and found a bunch of my old Arthur C. Clarke books. In addition to 2001 and Rendezvous with Rama, I also found Childhood's End, Songs of Distant Earth, and Imperial Earth. I did not find the sequels to either of the first two books, but that's OK, as I never liked the sequels to 2001 or Rama anywhere nearly as much as the originals. ;)

Looks like a Clarke reread after the Elric/Moorcock reread. :)

a bit under the weather

I'm a bit under the weather today, and am missing work. I think I will watch some old classic films today in between bouts of running to the potty and taking naps. Maybe a fluffy one like How to Marry a Millionaire and a more serious one like Niagara. Amazon has finally figured out that I like old classic movies, and has been dropping them in my gold box really cheap a couple of times a week. I think I have most of the old classic Marilyn Monroe movies now, and quite a few of Carey Grant's. I am hoping they will move on to Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn and Gregory Peck or Humphrrey Bogart soon!

finally a book reviewer who tells it like it is!

And a reviewer from a major publication finally tells it like it is!!!!

From Publisher's Weekly on the upcoming Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake novel Blood Noir:

Quote:
Blood Noir
Laurell K. Hamilton Berkley, $25.95 (352p) ISBN 978-0-425-22219-5

The florid 16th Anita Blake novel (after 2007's The Harlequin) updates Anita's endlessly erotic adventures as a living vampire with many weird lovers. Anita serves her vampire sweetie Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis, obsessed with feeding him and her own need to leech off of others' sexual pleasure or “ardeur” while retaining her rep as vampire executioner (despite the seeming conflict of interest), U.S. marshal and necromancer. She's also accompanying her bed-buddy Jason Schuyler to visit his dying estranged father in North Carolina. After arriving, Jason's mistaken for his rich cousin Keith Summerland, who's ditched his bride-to-be to run off with the wife of a vampire Master, giving Anita a case to solve between wild orgies with wereanimals. Hamilton chronicles Anita's escapades with a growing air of ennui, which longtime readers can't help sharing as sex increasingly takes the place of plot and character development. (June)

YEAH, BABY - TELL THE TRUTH!!!! :sky:

very busy days off!

Well, we worked our butts off on the days  I was off from work.

On Friday Bill came home, and got to lift a lot of heavy bags of garden dirt for his trouble. I had bought hundreds of bulbs last fall and could not plant them because of the nasty infection I got on my finger. So I went through them and most were still alive - sprouting, in fact! So we decided we had to get them into the ground ASAP so that they could live.

On Saturday we moved heavy furniture around from room and room and cleaned for hours. It was awful. But we got everything done that we wanted to get done.

We also found out that Dan's stepmother had a stroke, but that she is doing OK.

And on Saturday night Dan and I went to that amazing jazz concert!

How come I have a bad feeling about being tired at work this week?

the Midwest earthquake

Well, the other morning (Friday, I think) there was supposedly an earthquake that rattled the Midwest and parts of the Great Lakes regions. It was between 0500 and 0600, and we all slept right through the thing!

Bill told me it was strong enough that it did wake everyone up down in Muncie, Indian, though. He thought someone was shaking him awake for a dorm fire drill. His roommate thought it was all a bad dream. LOL!

Glad no one was hurt anywhere, and that there was no serious damage.

an evening with McFerrin, Corea, and DeJohnette

Last night Calibaby and I went to hear Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea,
and Jack DeJohnette in concert in Ann Arbor.

Bobby McFerrin has an amazing vocal range. He can go from bass to well up into the usual women's ranges. The program said he can stretch four octives. 8)

Chick Corea, of course, is a renowned jazz pianist. :piano:

John DeJohnette is a god of percussion. :cloud:

Together they were just...amazing. Awesome. Extraordinary! :o Ninety minutes of 100% improv, with those three jazz geniuses...playing. As in having a lot of fun with their music and with each other and with the audience. At times all three of them were scat singing, and bringing in the audience to scat sing along with them. And at times Corea played drums along with DeJohnette, and at times McFerrin played four handed piano with Corea.

In the end, after their first encore, they came out again and took questions from the audience. How cool is that?

sort of a bad day

As with all people who work second shift, I have to unwind at home for an hour or two after getting home from work. Think of it this way if you are a day shift worker - you do not usually come home from work and hit the hay by 1700. I usually do not get to bed until about 0200.

This morning I got a very ugly awakening at 0630 when Dan's cell phone (which he had accidentally left next to our bed) rang. I wanted to flush the darned thing down the toilet, but I was nice and I got up and took it to Steven, who in turn took it to his father.

And then bizarre things started happening. We have a clock radio which has a telephone component. We got rid of our land line house phone when we got the cable computer broadband (the costs sort of evened out). Well, the line is still there, but turned off. but this morning, shortly after the cell phone incident, the phone that is part of the clock radio...started dialing all by itself. Very weird and strange and creepy. And not just once - but again and again and again. It was calling either a 1-800 or long distance number, too! I picked up the phone a couple of times and could hear computer sounds coming out of it, though no dial tone (and since our phone service is turned off, we should not have a dial tone.

Just bizarre.

So it was a bad start to a strange day.

I am so tired from lack of sleep that I feel hung over.

Hope I get better sleep tonight!

Tigers are AWAKE baby!

With an unknown minor leaguer named Galarraga (replacing the injured Dontrelle Willis) as their starting pitcher, the Tigers have won their third straight game against a division rival.  On Monday and Tuesday they beat the Twinkies at home at Comerica, tonight it was the Tribe in Cleveland. They are hitting up a storm; the tongue lashing they got from the Skipper must have worked!~ This is the team we have been expecting to see all year and have not!

Let's just hope they keep it up - especially against teams in our own division!

Migs

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080415/SPORTS02/80415030/1050/rss15

Here is a Detroit Free Press article on the horrendous and heartbreaking start of the Detroit Tigers 2008 season.

I know that Cabrera will never see this, but if he does I want to respond to something he said:

* Dude, no one is laughing at you. We can all tell just by watching you trying to field or trying to run the bases that you are not healthy. Pain sucks, and trying to play when you are in pain sucks. We know that you will play and hit better when you get healthier. We are willing to wait for that to happen. In fact, no one would be upset if you went on the disabled list for a couple of weeks so you can rest your hurt leg and feel better! We just want you to get better, whatever it takes, so that you can feel physically well - and when that happens, your playing and hitting will improve by leaps and bounds.

* Dude, none of us are laughing at the Tigers. We are too busy crying to laugh!!! Believe me, for us long term Detroit baseball fans, there is nothing to laugh at this season!!! I can not answer for fans of other teams, and it may well be that Royals fans and White Sox fans might be laughing. But not Michiganders!

White Sox amusement

See??? I'm not the only person who thinks that Bobby Jenks, the White Sox closer has incredibly fugly face fur!!!

Tigers win! Red Wings lose!

Last night was as strange reversal of fortune. the Red Wings blew a lead in the third period and lost their playoff game. The Tigers were getting badly blown out when the bats suddenly sprang to life, and they ended up winning! Life is strange and mysterious at times!

Having a bad week. Work is busy. Got an email from Bill saying he is doing terribly in his calculus class. And of course it is too late in the term for him to do anything about dropping the class or any easy solution. And the dog is making horrible messes every day. I just cleaned up a big poop mess. I have been dreaming of running away from home, just to get away from the elderly incontinent dog!

Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

Watched this little quiet gem of a movie today.

An aging Japanese fisherman has been estranged from his son for many years. He feels very bad about it, as does the son's kind wife. When his daughter-in-law calls him to tell him his son is in the hospital in Tokyo, very sick, he rushes to Tokyo to try to see his son.

Unfortunately, while he and his son's wife desperately want a reconciliation between himself and his son, the son refuses to see him.

The son's wife gives the father a video of some of the work the son has been doing in China. The son is a professor of Far Eastern folk art, and has a strong interest in Chinese mask opera. On the video the son promises to return to China to film an opera called Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.

The father decides to go to China and film the opera, as his son will never be able to do so.

All sorts of complications arise when he gets to China, and it seems to be an insurmountable task to do the videotaping.

Lovely and quiet little film, starring Takakura Ken as the aging father.

This is a very sad movie, but such as well performed and well made one!

tough days to be a Tigers fan

These are tough days to be a Detroit Tigers fan. These early weeks of the season might be the darkest since the infamous 2003 season. I know the under performing players can all do better than this, and that they eventually will. But in the meantime this season is making me frustrated.

Take the eighth inning yesterday in Chicago. Raw, cold, rainy day. Justin Verlander has a two hitter going into the eighth inning, but the Chicago pitcher has a one hitter, so we are down 1-0. As soon as the Chicago pitcher gives up a hit in the eighth, their manager pulls him. It is a horrible day weather wise, it is late in the game, he's done a hell of a job, and let's not push the guy too hard so early in the season.Good decision by Ozzie. So in Verlander's half of the inning, he comes out and immediately starts to struggle, walking Chicago batters and hitting some with pitches. Our manager leaves him in the game. What the heck was the point of leaving him in when he has already pitched seven full innings in terrible weather, and did such a great job (a two hitter)? Needless to say, by the time he got pulled, disaster had struck, the game was way out of reach, and his ERA was totally screwed. Why would you treat such a good young pitcher that way? yeah, I know our bullpen is overworked - but what was the point of the eighth inning yesterday???

Kenny Rogers wasn't looking very good when I left the house to come to work; I am afraid to check the score. It was 1-0. I am sure it is much worse than that now!

On the other hand, the Red Wings won their playoff game yesterday, and lead their first round series against the Preds 2-0.

And the stir fry last night was magnificently good! Yum! I brought some left overs to work with me for lunch.

It snowed all day today. None of it stuck to the ground; it all melted. But it was depressing to see it, anyway!

new Ahira's Hangar

The board was moved to a shiny new site filled with great new features!

nice but cold and rainy day

It is a cold and rainy day. A bit frustrating, as I would love to be working in my flower beds, and also getting my veggie/herb garden ready for spring planting. But at least I got a lot of yard work done yesterday. Hopefully, I can get a nice weather day on my next days off.

We went out to breakfast this morning at the Coney Island in Milan. It featured delicious food and a pleasant time.

I then dropped Steven off at a friend's house in Ypsilanti. I then went to the grocery store. Dan and I had been planning on going out for Asian food tonight - but they had lots of fresh snow peas at the store. Snow peas are a great weakness of mine. So I got the stuff for us to make stir fry at home, and am very excited about it.

what we will have:

frozen vegetarian egg rolls (I love home made egg rolls, but they are time consuming and fussy to make)

stir fry with:

hot and spicy sze chuan sauce

sliced water chestnuts

bamboo shoots

bean sprouts

broccoli

carrots

snow peas

lamb

This afternoon I will watch the Tigers and Red Wings games, alternating. This is the second Wings playoff game. Go Wings! I hope the Tigers can win another game, too. I am very interested in finding out what is going on with Dontrelle Willis's knee, as his slip and fall was very similar to mine last year (other than his was on a wet pitcher's mound and mien was on a wet floor at work). I am hoping since he is a young and healthy athlete, his will heal much better and quicker than mine. But since they have mentioned surgery (which I have not had time to investigate or have done),  I am interested in finding out how they treat his.

Anyway, even with the crappy weather, I am having a very nice day. It will be better if the Wings and Tigers win, though. (Yes, I am a Detroiter and Michigander, born and bred.)

knee pain

Tonight in Chicago the Tigers won their second game.

But it was a cold and rainy night, and Detroit's starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis had a slip and fall on the pitching mound in the first inning and got hurt. If anyone sees that in sports highlights anywhere, know that is pretty much what happened to me when I blew out my knee last year! Feet went right out from under me, and the right knee got hyperextended as I came down. Hope Willis did not rip up things in his knee in his accident, the way I did! :o  :box: :broken: :doomed:

Despite being exhausted today, I did get out for several hours of yard work before the rain moved in. I am glad I got it done - possible snow tomorrow!

In addition to crocuses, we also now have squills and miniature Dutch irises blooming. I am very pleased for all of the little beauties blooming all over the yard!

exhausted

Wow. After a rough and busy week at work I am exhausted today. I have tried to get a little yard work done, but all I want right now is a nice long nap!

We're under a tornado watch until pretty late tonight. More crazy Michigan weather!

Have crocuses in all sorts of colors blooming everywhere today - and you can see all of the spring bulbs sprouting very nicely all over my yard.

Tigers get their first win

Thank God, the Detroit Tigers finally got their first win last night. Bondo (Bonderman) had his second solid start, but this time the other players gave him run support. That is a ginormous ugly nasty monkey off of their backs!

Henry Fonda?

I got the surprise of my life last night when Dan and I were watching an old movie when I got home from work. He pointed to the screen and said "Hey! There's that actor who looks so much like your father!". He was pointing at Henry Fonda in his role as a general in The Longest Day. Now then, Fonda had dark hair and eyes, and my father gave me golden brown/honey blonde hair and green/blue eyes. So the coloring is different, but Dan says that the high forehead, shape of face, nose, ears, and body build is all very similar.

I only have pictures of my father online when he is quite elderly (I'll have to scan in some of him when he was younger), but tell me if you think their faces (particularly the high forehead) is similar:

That is my parents on their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

here is Henry Fonda in a couple of views:

the sounds of spring!

The last two mornings I woke up to hear bird song at dawn.

Tonight I let the dog out, and could hear frogs calling from the little lake behind the houses across the street.

I know we are due for more snow (mixed with rain) later this week, but spring has been slowly sneaking into lower Michigan.

Tigers lose again

http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2008/04/dont_give_up_on_tigers_yet.html

Well, this helps a little bit. It's bad, but I have to keep reminding myself to be patient. With players like Maggs and Migs and Polly, you know the team has to start giving their pitchers run support at some point this season. The starters have pitched well enough to win some of the games, it's just that they got no run support, and not enough help from the relief pitchers.

The bullpen might be beyond help, though. Grilli, good grief, Grilli! Lost us that one game by letting in three runs with three pitches!

Just wanted to post a link to a great little discussion board about books, sports, music, and all sorts of other things!

busy weekend

Man, did we ever have a busy weekend.

On Friday I took Steven out to lunch. We went to Chili's because it was close to the store where I had to go shopping, and we knew there were some television there so we could watch the Tigers game. So we sat there and watched the early innings of the game and ate lunch. It was pretty nice, spending time with my son that way.

After I had to go shopping at one of the stores at Arborland Mall (the Bed, Bath, and Beyond) for a wedding shower gift. And then we had to stop off at a little store in Saline to pick up Steven's varsity jacket, which was finally ready.

So we get home, and I immediately had nasty diarrhea once again. I just cannot seem to get better, no matter how closely I watch what I eat. I have lost about 25 pounds in the last three weeks since this thing got going, and it just doesn't seem to want to get any better. **sigh**

On Saturday Steven wanted to go to a Super Smash brothers brawl tournament with some friends, so I got to ferry him and one of his friends around. they had a lot of fun, so it was all cool. After the tournament, Dan and I took the kids out to dinner at Applebee's. It was a fun evening, even though the darned Tigers lost again. And to the stinking White Sox, to add insult to injury.

Sunday was a lovely spring day, so we did yard work all day before I had to go to real work. I got burrs in my clothing, skin, and hair, and scratched my arms all over on branches and brush. But some of my little snow crocuses are blooming, so that sort of makes gardening worth the time and trouble!

getting emails about the Tigers

Today I started getting emails from people out of state wondering what is going on with the Detroit Tigers and why they are off to such a bad start to the season.

Good grief.

baseball continues

Perfect early spring day for baseball...a bit cold, but sunny. Kenny Rogers appeared to be giving a great start, and like Monday, I go off to work with the starting pitcher doing well, and next time I check the score at work, they were losing. Seems like the hitters are having some early season problems. But with the hitters the Tigers have, it will be only a matter of time before they get going. What is much more important today was that Kenny Rogers was healthy and well today (at least in the early innings, when I was able to watch the game). And Verlander looked great yesterday in the early innings. If those two can stay healthy, it will be only a matter of time before the hitters get going, and we will be winning lots of games. And I will give the young pitcher from the Royals full credit for today - he pitched a magnificent game. He should be a great pitcher for Kansas City this season!

Now, I am expecting a Tigers loss tomorrow. Bonderman is supposed to be the starting pitcher, and word has it that he was so sick today they sent him home from the ball park. So I am not expecting a great performance from him under the circumstances.

Work was quiet today - blessedly it has been all week. That is always a big relief.

baseball starts!

Yesterday was opening day at Comerica. A sure sign that spring is eventually coming and therefore close to a holy day here in Michigan! The day stared out cloudy and rainy, then cloudy and windy, and then rainy and very windy. They got the ball game in during the cloudy and windy time period in the afternoon. The Tigers lost. Curses! But it was still good to see the Boys of Summer out on the field.

No game today, but if weather allows they will play tomorrow.

Almost all of the snow is melted from out yard, and we have entered the shoulder season between winter and  spring locally called Mud Season. We had high winds all day long today, and I feel very lucky we lost no trees and did not lose our electricity. When we get wind storms during Mud Season, often the root systems of trees cannot hold their trees up, so they come flopping down.

Hopefully we can plant the cherry trees soon - when Dan tried the other day the ground was still frozen.

On Friday I have to go shopping at one of the most expensive stores at the Mall for a bridal shower gift, as Macy's is where the couple is registered. I told Steven I was going to make him come along with me, but that we could go out for a good lunch.

I was brave tonight. I had two swallows out of Dan's glass of milk. I had a bit of cheese yesterday. I have also had some fruit. I am hoping to be able to eat normally in another week or so.
